The English National Curriculum is divided into two Key Stages. Key Stage One (5 to 7 year olds) and Key Stage Two (7 to 11 year olds). The core subjects are: English, Mathematics and Science, plus Information Communication Technology (I.C.T.), Religious Education, History, Geography, Music, Art, Physical Education and Design Technology. In all areas of the Curriculum we emphasise effort, personal achievement and co-operation.
We regularly re-assess and modify our schemes of work to take into account educational developments, and relevance to our Asian setting, always bearing in mind that our aim is to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum.

Literacy Strategy The language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are crucial, and are at the heart of the literacy strategy.
The children are taught using a range of world literature. From the earliest stages our children derive great pleasure from sharing books and listening to stories. We provide a lively reading environment and the children are enthused and guided by structured and sensitive teaching. The children's individual needs and interests are catered for, and all children borrow books from the class library.
Children are taught to write for a variety of purposes, both fictional and non fictional, such as creating imaginative and descriptive writing, reports and persuasive points of view. Spelling, grammar and handwriting skills are systematically developed throughout the whole school.
Numeracy Strategy The English National Numeracy Strategy forms the guidelines for the teaching of mathematics, with an emphasis on maths strategies that help develop the 'landscape of number'. This includeds mental math strategies and the inter-relationship between concepts that allows a child a variety of innovative approaches to solve original problems. The children gain the mathematics of number, algebra, measurement, shape and space/geometry.
We stimulate, extend and challenge the children's thinking during our Numeracy time each day. We use a variety of mathematical methods including games to reinforce children's learning and to enable them to acquire skills and concepts with enthusiasm.

Science is a core subject within the Curriculum. Children acquire skills, knowledge and understanding through investigation and observation. We place high importance on developing children's methods of enquiry and systematic scientific thinking through practical experimentation.
Information, Communication Technology (I.C.T) is a vital subject, not only as a lesson on modern communication systems and how the internet and computer networks systems work, but also as an intergrated part of schoool life. Here word processing, graphics, presentational and data handling packages are used across the curriculum as tools to aid a child's learning.
All other foundation subjects; Geography, History, Physical Education, Music, Religious Education, Art and Design Technology are widely resourced, and are taught taking advantage of our unique Asian environment.
Standards for the English National Curriculum are overviewed by the Qualification Curriculum Authority (QCA), and may be seen at www.standards.dfee.gov.uk.
After school activities, such as swimming, football, raquet sports, Mandarin, drama, art and our student newspaper 'The Surabaya Snooper', provide the children with a variety of new skills and experiences. Every activity is run by teachers of the school and members of our school community.

Lunch - the whole school together
|
Every lunch time the pupils of SES can be found enjoying lunch together. The children set up the tables, serve each other and also take care of the washing-up. Lunch time is for enjoying a well balanced hot lunch and brushing up on social skills by sharing stories and practising table manners. SES is the only school in Surabaya that provides hot, home cooked meals for the children.
